Following the conclusion of the IPL Finals, Mohammed Shami was formally awarded the Purple Cap after claiming 28 wickets in 17 matches. Mohit Sharma and Rashid Khan secured the second and third positions, respectively, with 27 wickets each. This underscores Gujarat’s dominance with the ball in the 16th edition of the tournament. However, their journey ended in disappointment as they lost to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final, missing out on the opportunity to become the third franchise to win the IPL in consecutive years.

Fascinating Stories Behind IPL Purple Cap

In 2008, Pakistan’s Sohail Tanvir made history by becoming the first bowler to receive the Purple Cap. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, he took an impressive 22 wickets in 11 matches during that season. Bhuvneshwar Kumar stands out as the only bowler to clinch consecutive Purple Caps, achieving this feat in 2016 and 2017.

Dwayne Bravo and Harshal Patel jointly hold the record for the highest number of wickets in a single IPL season, with both scalping 32 wickets. In 2009, RP Singh made history by becoming the first Indian cricketer to win the Purple Cap while playing for Deccan Chargers (now defunct).

In the previous edition of the IPL, Mohammed Shami of Gujarat Titans secured the honour, claiming 28 wickets with an impressive average of 17 and an economy rate of seven in 16 matches. However, due to an ankle injury requiring surgery, Shami will miss the upcoming IPL 2024 season and the T20 World Cup.
